WOSF Episode 12
What do you do when you find yourself stranded on a desert planet in a rusted out old ship with a homeless princess?
Head for the nearest "wretched hive of scum and villainy", of course?
Hadrian says "we totally had Jedi Master Fleeing Order 66 With Her Wounded Padawan vibes on this part of the trip".
Apologies if you're not a Star Wars fan and have no idea what we're talking about!!
But we did decide to just up and go to Vegas for a long weekend because:
- We were only a few hours away
- We kind of maybe wanted to go to Death Valley to see the wildflowers bloom still (see May episodes for how THAT turned out!) and it would be on the way
- We still had one old missionary pal in that area who had been sending encouraging messages and prayer support up until we left
- Hotels there are actually not that expensive if you just get a basic room because they assume they're going to make their big money on nightlife and casinos, not the room rent. Since we were still abiding by the Mormon dietary laws (no alcohol, and Hadrian is under 21 anyway), and neither of us thinks it's prudent to gamble (plus Mormons forbid that too), we ended up getting an amazing deal because not only was the room cheap, but we got given a bunch of free stuff! See the next few comics.
- After making the decision to stay out west and in fact go further west rather than return to Ohio immediately after the wedding weekend (we had been lied to and made to believe we would be finding housing immediately and then we could just drop stuff and run back and pick up more), Hadrian needed some medical supplies to be restocked and I decided to book the cheap room in Vegas for long enough to get those items shipped to the hotel, since you can't get stuff shipped by drone to a van that's rolling down the freeway - yet! But most hotels can accept a package for you and I ended up having a unique adventure when I went down to the Luxor's business center to pick up his supplies!!
We chose the Luxor both for the good pricing (although several hotels were comparable), and for the Biblical "journey to Egypt" theme as seen in our comic discussions. We would definitely go there again! The valet guys loved our Viking van and parked it right next to their station so they could admire it. We were able to pick up some nice hometown football swag, too, although out of season for catching a game in person, so the van got a little Raider Nation sticker facelift which Hadrian highly approved of.
